At Mellors, we believe that food education goes far beyond the plate. That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce our newest initiative: Little Bee Keepers — a buzzing, interactive experience bringing real beehives into schools! This isn’t just about honey — it’s about teaching children vital lessons on sustainability, biodiversity, and where their food really comes from. By placing live beehives into school outdoor spaces, we’re giving students a front-row seat to the magic of nature and the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem. It’s the bee-ginning of something truly special. What is “Little Bee Keepers”? At Mellors, we serve more than just meals — we serve up meaningful experiences. Our new initiative aligns with our mission to provide educational, environmentally conscious, and food-focused learning opportunities in schools. The Little Bee Keepers initiative was brought to life by three incredible Mellors team members— Sarah, Nikki, and Emma — whose passion for sustainability inspired a new way to engage students with nature. At Mellors, we nurture talent from within, and as a proud family-run company, we were able to act fast to bring their idea to life. Backed by local bee experts and armed with plenty of research, our team is ensuring that both the bees and students receive the highest standard of care and attention. While still in the early stages, the initiative has already started generating quite a buzz! Why Beehives in Schools? Bees are more than just honey producers — they are eco-superstars that pollinate the plants we rely on for food. Sadly, British beehive numbers have dropped by nearly 75% over the last century. It’s more important than ever to help children understand the vital role bees play in our food system and the environment. By installing hives on school grounds, we offer children: Hands-on learning about beekeeping and pollination A deeper appreciation for biodiversity and sustainability The chance to connect nature to their plates — understanding where food comes from and how it’s produced Social and environmental awareness through collaborative, real-world experiences Did you know? British beehives have decreased by nearly 75% over the past century Bees can fly up to 25 mph There are over 270 species of bee in the UK alone Bees pollinate many of the crops we rely on every day One worker bee produces just 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime — yet plays an essential role in global agriculture The Bee Package As a Mellors partner school, you’ll receive full support through our tailored Bee Package, including: A live beehive, complete with a queen bee PPE for students and staff All the equipment and resources needed to safely manage and care for your hive Full installation, training, and ongoing support from our dedicated Mellors team We even guide your staff so they can eventually take the lead — creating an independent beekeeping experience right on campus. Join Little Bee Keepers! The Little Bee Keepers programme is about more than just bees. It’s about inspiring curiosity, fostering respect for nature, and cultivating a new generation of environmentally conscious learners. With your school’s help, we can create a buzz that will benefit pupils, local wildlife, and the planet for years to come.
